Decentralised Energy-from-Waste (EfW) is a topic we’re extremely passionate about here at Tidy Planet – and it’s something we’ve been shining the spotlight on at a number of events we’ve attended this year.
From RWM to ORC 2021, we’ve been taking to the stage – both virtually and in person – sharing our expertise and knowledge, alongside our partners Sugimat and Turboden.
We’ve been exploring how these scalable, decentralised EfW solutions meet the UK’s needs for energy recovery from refuse derived fuel (RDF) and solid recovered fuel (SRF), and how they can help both waste operators and local authorities alike to harness the true resource potential of their solid waste and power the circular economy.

Powered by the Horizon+ rotary boiler technology
Forming part of this innovative technology is Sugimat’s self-cleaning rotary boiler for solid waste – the Horizon+.
The equipment has been specifically designed with ‘dirty fuels’ – such as RDF and SRF – in mind. And it’s no secret that these waste streams generate high volumes of slag and ash, which can create a sticky residue that clogs up the system and causes unplanned downtime.
As a result, one of the greatest challenges often facing EfW operatives is ensuring a continuous running of their system – driving maximum uptime, combustion efficiency, and maintaining clean equipment.
And traditionally, lots of manual intervention was needed to achieve and sustain peak productivity. The Horizon+ technology challenges those norms.
The boiler has a rotating mechanism which allows fluid to circulate within the system easily and causes the ash to fall away from the boiler tubes. As a result, this keeps them clear of residue and boosts performance and plant uptime.
